Dodgers’ Jansen now at camp after having coronavirus

- Staff, news service reports — Robert Morales

Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen reported to summer camp on Sunday, nine days later than it started, and said the delay was because he, his wife and their three children had contracted the coronavirus.

Jansen said there were symptoms of the virus, but none too severe, and that everyone is now feeling well. His son Kaden was the first to test positive after running a fever in the middle of the night, Jansen said, and then the rest of the family was confirmed to have it. Jansen’s first test was negative, but then he tested positive.

“I was feeling better on day 4 already when I had it almost three weeks ago now,” Jansen said Sunday afternoon, via Zoom.

Jansen expects to be ready for the season opener on July 23, when the Giants visit Dodger Stadium.

Jansen said he thought he did everything he could to avoid the coronavirus, and still isn’t sure how his son caught it. Jansen also had some words of wisdom.

“It’s serious,” he said. “Just wear your mask all the time if you can. Trust me, it happens so fast. I mean, once my son got it, I see how fast the virus spreads. We tried to do everything, but we all got it in the house.”

Jansen said he’s lucky that he and his family are all in good shape, “so it didn’t hit us as hard.”

Jansen in 2018 underwent a second procedure to correct an irregular heartbeat in 2018. That made testing positive for coronavirus a bit more unnerving than it might have been.

“I mean, it was definitely scary and a definite disappointment,” Jansen said. “When my son had it, it was more disappointment of, ‘Why my son has it? Why not me?’ ... And next thing you know, we all got it.”

“I’ve wanted to play well here for a long time,” said Fish, a six-time winner on the ATP Tour. “It just doesn’t suit my eye very well, so I haven’t put it all together. And thankfully I put it all together yesterday because it wasn’t today and it wasn’t Friday.”

The celebrity tournament was played without fans at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Fish birdied the par-5 16th and 18th holes for a 21-point day and 76-point total — nine better than Williams — under the modified Stableford scoring system.
