One killed, three injured in fiery car-truck collision

The semi caught fire after impact, which sent it crashing into a nearby building

OAKLAND >> A woman was killed and three other people, including a 14-year-old girl, were injured late Monday night when a car and a semi-truck collided in East Oakland, authoritie­s said.

Authoritie­s were trying to identify the woman killed. She is believed to be in her 20s or 30s.

The collision happened at about 11:28 p.m. Monday at 68th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard and was heard by police officers in the area.

Police traffic investigat­ors said an Internatio­nal semi-truck was traveling southbound on 68th Avenue when a Mercedes traveling west on Foothill Boulevard collided into it. After the collision, the semi-truck crashed into a building resulting in the truck and building catching fire, police said.

Firefighte­rs responded and were able to extinguish the fires and provide medical treatment to those injured.

The woman killed was a passenger in the Mercedes and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Mercedes, a 33-year-old Hayward man, was transporte­d to a local hospital with severe injuries.

Another female passenger in the Mercedes, a 14-year-old girl, was transporte­d to a local hospital and is in stable condition.

The driver of the truck, a 37-year-old Visalia man, suffered severe burns and was transporte­d to a local hospital in stable condition.

Police said alcohol and speed appear to be factors in the collision.
