Suspect in fatal shooting had been released from jail
A Berkeley man accused of shooting another man to death at a home in the Berkeley hills last weekend had been released from Santa Rita Jail only three days earlier, authorities said.
Jessie McAllister has been charged with murder and possession of a gun by a convicted felon in the Sept. 26 shooting in the 1100 block of Glen Avenue, according to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. Authorities said he admitted to the shooting.
A u t h o r i t i es ide n t i - fied the victim as Alfred Charles Taylor Jr. but did not provide an age or residence.
Berkeley police arrested McAllister at the Amtrak station, University Avenue and Fourth Street, on Monday after authorities had issued a warrant for his arrest. Police said in a declaration of probable cause that McAllister had been released from Santa Rita Jail on Sept. 23.
He was in jail because of a shooting in Berkeley in
June, authorities said. No information on that shooting was available immediately.
McAllister initially denied being in Berkeley or knowing the victim, but he changed his story when confronted with evidence and admitted to the shooting, authorities said.
He emerged as a suspect after witnesses told police that McAllister had fired the shots inside the residence.
According to authorities, McAllister was convicted in Alameda County Superior Court on July 30 of being a felon in possession of a gun. In Sept. 2015, he was convicted in the same county of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, and almost exactly a year earlier, he was convicted of first- degree residential burglary.
He received a prison term only after the 2015 conviction, according to authorities. He was given probation for the other two, authorities said.
