Raiders place defensive lineman Hurst on the coronavirus list

- — Michael Nowels

The Raiders placed defensive lineman Maurice Hurst on their coronavirus list Tuesday, two days after they lost to the Buffalo Bills.

The coronavirus list includes players who have tested positive for COVID-19 and those who are in close contact with someone who’s tested positive. It’s not clear yet if Hurst tested positive — teams typically have not announced that information so far this season.

As of Tuesday afternoon, the Raiders have announced no plans to alter their weekly schedule ahead of Sunday’s game at the Kansas City Chiefs, who had their Week 4 game moved to Monday after Patriots quarterback Cam Newton tested positive late last week.

Hurst played 35 snaps in Sunday’s 3023 loss to the Bills, more than half of the Raiders’ defensive plays and the most action he’s seen in a game this season. He has 13 tackles and a half-sack in four games in 2020.

One of the reasons Hurst played so much was that starting defensive tackle Maliek Collins left after 25 snaps with a shoulder injury. It’s unclear if Collins will be ready to play when the Raiders visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

With defensive tackle Daniel Ross having been placed on injured reserve last week, the Raiders could be shorthanded in the middle of their defense. Both Clelin Ferrell and Kendal Vickers, listed as defensive ends, have the capability of playing inside.

The third-year pro out of Michigan was not among the Raiders to appear at tight end Darren Waller’s charity fundraiser last Monday without face masks. Waller, quarterback Derek Carr and others received fines from the NFL for the violation of the league’s coronavirus rules.

The maskless charity appearance is just one of several lapses from the Raiders, who were fined for allowing a non-credentialed team employee into their locker room and for head coach Jon Gruden’s failure to properly wear his mask on the sidelines of their win over the Saints. Gruden noted in his defense that he had the virus over the summer, saying he takes it seriously.

There is no indication whether Hurst’s situation is related to any of the coronavirus relations the Raiders have incurred.
