OAKLAND >> A 68-year- old man was shot in West Oakland on Thursday afternoon in an apparent drug-related dispute, and the suspect surrendered to responding police officers, authorities said Friday.

A gun believed used in the shooting was recovered from the 45-year- old suspect, and suspected heroin and cocaine he tried to hide nearby were found and seized, police said.

Neither man’s name has been released.

Authorities said the men were both transients who knew each other and apparently were living at a homeless camp in the area.

The shooting was reported about 4:20 p. m. Thursday in the 2300 block of San Pablo Avenue near West Grand Avenue.

The 68-year- old man, who was shot more than once, was sitting on the pavement when the first officers arrived on the scene.

As officers were getting out of their vehicle, the 45-year- old man approached them and admitted being the shooter, authorities said.

A gun was recovered from the man and the drugs were found later hidden behind a nearby dumpster, authorities said.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was in stable condition.

Authorities said the shooting apparently was the result of a drug-related dispute between the two men.

Officers could be seen counting packages of cocaine base on the hood of a cruiser.

A woman also walked up to the scene and said, “I hear my husband was shot.”

The woman later was seen crying and talking with officers.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault with a firearm, assault with a semi-automatic firearm, elder abuse and numerous drug counts and was being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.
