Hovland claims second PGA title with birdie on 18
Viktor Hovland of Norway holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole Sunday for a 6-under 65 and a one-shot victory in Mexico’s Mayakoba Golf Classic, his second PGA Tour victory this year. He finished at 20-under 264.
It was the first time since the Mayakoba Classic began in 2007 that it was won with a birdie putt on the final hole. For the 23-yearold Hovland, it’s old hat. He made a 30-foot birdie putt on the last hole to win the Puerto Rico Open in February.
Aaron Wise closed with a 63 and did everything right over the last two holes except make the birdie putts. Tied for the lead, he missed birdie putts from 12 feet on each of the last two holes at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa Del Carmen.
Adam Long (67) and Tom Hoge (69) tied for third at 17-under 267. 43-YEAR-OLD ANGELA STANFORD WINS HER HOME LPGA TOUR EVENT >> Angela Stanford won her home LPGA Tour event in front of her parents, closing with a 4-under 67 for a two-stroke victory in the Volunteers of America Classic in The Colony, Texas.
The 43-year- old former TCU star from Fort Worth won her seventh LPGA Tour title and first since the major Evian Championship in 2018. She finished at 7-under 277 at Old American Golf Club.
Inbee Park, So Yeon Ryu and 19-year- old Yealimi
Noh of Concord, tied for the third-round lead, each shot 70 to tie for second in the final tuneup before the U. S. Women’s Open next week at Champions Golf Club in Houston.
BROADCASTER ALLISS, BBC’S ‘VOICE OF GOLF,’ DIES AT 89 >> Longtime BBC Sports broadcaster and World Golf Hall of Famer Peter Alliss died Sunday at 89. Known to a generation of European fans as the “Voice of Golf,” Alliss passed away at his home in Surrey, England, after a short battle with illness, according to the Ryder Cup website.
Alliss played professionally from 1947-75, winning 31 tournaments across the globe and competing on eight Ryder Cup teams. He began his tenure as the BBC’s lead golf commentator in 1978 and was known for his dry humor. He also worked for ABC and ESPN in the United States and for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Backup Andrew Tarbell, a former San Jose Earthquakes goalie, made four saves for the third- seeded Crew, who will face the winner from tonight’s Minnesota United-Seattle Sounders Western Conference final on Dec. 12.
Matt Turner made six saves for the eighth-seeded Revolution, who were seeking their sixth MLS Cup appearance and first title.

TIMBERWOLVES HIRE TOMJANOVICH AS CONSULTANT >> The Minnesota Timberwolves announced the hiring of Hall of Famer Rudy Tomjanovich as a player personnel consultant. Tomjanovich will provide analysis of potential draft, trade and free agency prospects, according to a press release.
The 72-year- old Tomjanovich was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2020. A five-time All-Star as a member of the Houston Rockets, Tomjanovich later coached the Rockets for 12 seasons and led them to back-toback NBA championships in 1993-94 and 1994-95.
He also coached Team USA to a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He last coached in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2004- 05, resigning after 41 games due to health concerns.

Racing Point driver finished 10.5 seconds ahead of Renault’s Esteban Ocon and 11.9 clear of teammate Lance Stroll in Sakhir, Bahrain.
“I’m speechless,” Perez said. “I hope I’m not dreaming.”
The Mexican does not even have an F1 seat next year after being replaced by Sebastian Vettel.
“I want to keep going,” Perez said. “If I’m not on the grid next year I will be in 2022.”
Horse racing
VETERANBAY AREA TRAINER DIES AFTER CONTRACTING CORONAVIRUS >> Robert B. Hess, Sr., a longtime Bay Area horse trainer, has died from complications of COVID-19 after contracting the virus during an outbreak last month at Golden Gate Fields. He was 86.
Hess, who had lived in Castro Valley since 1971, died Saturday at Eden Hospital in Castro Valley, his family said. Son Bob Hess, Jr., a Southern California horse trainer, said Sunday that his father tested positive for novel coronavirus in mid-November at Golden Gate, where he went to work each morning.
Golden Gate has suspended live racing until at least Dec. 26 after an outbreak last month in which more than 200 track employees tested positive for COVID-19.
Robert Hess Sr.’s horses won 1,592 times in 10,448 starts, earning more than $17.2 million, according to a track statement.
