Arizona State needs late run to hold off Washington State

Alonzo Verge Jr. scored on a challenged drive in the lane with 11 seconds left, lifting Arizona State to a 64-59 win over Washington State in the opening round of the Pac-12 Conference tournament on Wednesday in Las Vegas.

Verge finished with a season-high 26 points as the eighth-seeded Sun Devils (11-13) closed the game on a 10-2 run for their second win over ninth-seeded Washington State in less than two weeks. Arizona State beat Washington State 77-74 on Feb. 27 in Tempe.

The Sun Devils face No. 1 seed Oregon in the quarterfin­als on Thursday.

Isaac Bonton led Washington State (14-13) with 18 points and Noah Williams added 11.

UTAH 98, WASHINGTON 95>> Timmy Allen led six Utah scorers in double figures with 24 points and 11 rebounds, and the seventhsee­ded Utes (12-12) had to hold off a late charge by the 10th-seeded Huskies (5-21). Allen and the Utes jumped to a 17-point lead

early, led by 12 at halftime and never let Washington cut the deficit to singledigi­ts until late in the second half.

Mountain West tournament

WYOMING 111, SAN JOSE STATE 80 >> Graham Ike had a season-high 32 points as eighth-seeded Wyoming (14-10) beat ninth-seeded San Jose State in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament in won in Las Vegas.

Richard Washington had 18 points and six assists for the Spartans (516), who canceled the final three regular season games because of coronaviru­s protocols. Omari Moore added 15 points and six assists. Ralph Agee had 10 points.

Wyoming set a record for the most points in regulation in tournament history while Ike’s outburst was the most for a freshman in tournament history.

FRESNO STATE 85, NEW

MEXICO 77>> Deon Stroud had 19 points as the No. 6 seed Bulldogs (12-11) got past the 11th-seed Lobos (6-16). The Bulldogs play third-seeded Colorado State in the quarterfin­als Thursday. Isaiah Hill added 17 points for Fresno State.

UNLV 80, AIR FORCE 52>>The seventh-seeded Rebels (1214) played perhaps their most complete game of the season in a blowout of 10th-seeded Air Force at the Thomas & Mack Center. Guard David Jenkins Jr. scored a game-high 21 points and guard Bryce Hamilton had 18 points and seven rebounds.

UNLV will play secondseed­ed Utah State (18-7) in the quarterfin­als today.
