After man shot in the head, police discover ‘unpermitted apartment complex’ there
Victim uncooperative with authorities
A shooting here last month led police to the discovery of an “unpermitted apartment complex” in a building that appeared as a business from the outside, police said in court records.
The victim — described only as a man — survived several gunshot wounds, including a shot to the head, authorities said. He refused to cooperate with investigators and no arrests have been made, according to a spokesman for the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office.
The shooting was reported about 1:30 p.m. Feb. 7 on the 500 block of First Street in Rodeo by a caller who said he heard gunshots while showering at a property there. When police arrived, the victim was in the front room of a business there and police arranged for him to be taken by helicopter to a hospital.
As deputies conducted a safety sweep of the business, they reportedly discovered that it had been converted into an “unpermitted apartment complex” with several residents, rooms, showers and a large living room-type area in the front. Authorities also discovered a junkyard in an alleyway behind the building.
Code enforcement evicted the residents, but within several days they had returned, police said.
No firearms or bullet casings were discovered, and police have not released a description of the suspect or suspects. One witness reported seeing a gold sedan leaving the area, which is believed to be tied to the shooting, police said.
