HAYWARD >> Police shared limited details Tuesday after officers fatally shot a driver who allegedly struck multiple police vehicles, authorities said.

In a statement, police said officers had responded to at least a dozen robberies since December, all involving purse snatching from lone girls and women, and many of whom were seniors returning to vehicles from banks or ATMs and several involving assaults that ended with victims suffering injuries.

A vehicle seen by witnesses and victims near one such robbery, described as a blue Volvo with a white paper plate on its rear bumper, fled police who saw it nearby.

When one of several officers patrolling earlier robbery locations saw and tried to stop a vehicle with a similar description Monday, police said it fled at high speed.

At about 11 a.m. Tuesday, officers found a similar vehicle parked in a lot outside a Motel 6, 30155 Industrial Parkway Southwest, and tried to contact several occupants inside it.

When that vehicle tried to speed away and struck several patrol vehicles, police said at least one officer fired shots at it.

The vehicle’s driver, whom police did not identify pending next-of-kin notification, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A police officer was taken to a hospital and released after treatment of non-lifethreatening injury, police said.

Police did not identify the officers involved, citing pending parallel investigations by the department and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office into the shooting.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased man and the officers involved in this tragic incident,” police said in part.

“Any time Hayward police officers use force, regardless of the degree, it is a serious matter that requires a thorough investigation.”

Anyone with information may call Hayward police Detective Jenn Kell at 510-2937176.
