Students are set to return to classrooms under a hybrid model April 12 now that teachers have ratified a tentative agreement with the school district to begin reopening campuses for the remainder of the school year.

A hybrid model combines in-person instruction with online learning from home. San Leandro families have the option to keep their child in just online learning after classroom instruction returns.

About 45% of families have indicated a preference to return to inperson learning, according to Keziah Moss, director of community and employee engagement for the district.

“The amount of effort and energy that has brought us to this moment is truly staggering,” Superintendent Mike McLaughlin said in a statement. “Our school buildings are ready, our safety protocols are in place and our staff will be prepared to serve our students who are ready and able to return after the break. I have always known that the staff in San Leandro Unified is exceptional, and they have again proven that this district is a very special place for our students and families.”

Members of the San Leandro Teachers Association approved the agreement Monday. The vote was about 76% in support, Thomas Morse, president of the San Leandro Teachers Association, said in an email Wednesday. The union has

480 members.

The vote follows the school board March 16 approving a resolution to reopen schools.

In-person hybrid instruction at all grade levels will begin after students return from spring break.

Those who opt to return to class will be notified by Friday which group of students and staff they will be assigned to. At school, they will interact mostly with others in their group for safety reasons, Moss said.

“We recognize and honor the commitment that both our union and the district made to develop and negotiate a teaching model that protects the health and safety of our community and provides the conditions for the highest quality of teaching and learning,” Morse said in a statement.

The district has 13 schools, including an adult school, and about 8,700 students.
