ANTIOCH >> One person was in police custody and another remained at large after a police pursuit turned violent Saturday evening when a suspect shot a family dog and broke into an occupied home while attempting to evade arrest, Oakley police said.

Authorities said that the incident began around 6:30 p.m. when Oakley officers began pursuing a car they believed to be stolen into the city of Antioch. Police said the suspects inside the vehicle drove around the local Costco and through the downtown area, with one of the suspects firing at least one round that hit a passing car but didn’t injure anyone.

The driver of the vehicle crashed shortly after and two suspects in the car began to flee on foot, police said. Officers captured the driver without incident with help from a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s helicopter.

The second suspect fled into a residential area on West Third Street, jumping a fence into a backyard and shooting a dog that approached him, police said. The dog was being treated for a gunshot wound and is listed in stable condition.

The second suspect attempted to enter the house, police said, and eventually shot out the rear sliding glass door while the homeowner and his 14-year-old son were in the living room.

The two fled out the front window of the house and escaped unharmed. The suspect ran upstairs and took car keys and a green mechanic’s jumpsuit, police said, before heading toward K Street, jumping from yard to yard.

A Concord police dog tried to find the second suspect but was unsuccessful. The suspect was last seen in the area of West Third and K streets.

Anyone with information is asked to call Antioch Police Department.
