Browns’ QB Mayfield may miss Steelers game

-

Baker Mayfield isn’t healthy enough to practice, and he may not be much closer to playing either.

The Browns’ quarterback sat out Monday’s workout because of a troubling shoulder injury and there are early signs pointing to Mayfield missing this week’s home game against the rival Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mayfield’s dealing with a torn labrum and fracture in his non-throwing shoulder and was inactive Thursday night, when the Browns started backup QB Case Keenum and beat the Denver Broncos.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t provide much of an update on Mayfield’s condition or status other than to say “he’s feeling better” after sitting Thursday and following a long weekend to rest.

JETS QB WILSON WILL MISS TWO TO THREE GAMES WITH PCL INJURY >> The New York Jets will try to turn around their season without Zach Wilson for a few games.

The rookie quarterback has a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will be sidelined two to four weeks, coach Robert Saleh confirmed after Wilson had an MRI.

Wilson was injured in the second quarter of New York’s 54-13 loss to New England on Sunday when he was hit by Patriots linebacker Matt Judon, who fell on the back of the quarterback’s legs after he threw an incomplete pass.

Wilson and the team said after the game the initial diagnosis was a sprained PCL, which was the best-case scenario for the hobbled quarterback.

To help fill in for Wilson, the Jets acquired veteran Joe Flacco from Philadelphia for a conditional sixthround draft pick. The pick can become a fifth-rounder based on playing time for Flacco.

RAIDERS SURGE UNDER COACH BISACCIA >> Interim coach Rich Bisaccia has made the Las Vegas Raiders look like a new team the past two weeks.

The Raiders went from back-to-back double-digit losses in their final two games under Jon Gruden to consecutive doubledigit wins after following last week’s victory at Denver with a 33-22 win at home against Philadelphia on Sunday.

It’s the first time the Raiders (5-2) have had such a turnaround since 1992 as they head into their bye week in sole possession of first place in the AFC West for the first time since the final week of the 2016 season.

“We’re having a blast, winning is fun, that’s for sure,” quarterback Derek Carr said. “Losing in the NFL is hard on everybody. But when you win, it’s a lot of fun and right now we are having a lot of fun.” WASHINGTON’S FITZPATRICK TO HAVE MRI >> Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t walking through that door any time soon, which means Washington will continue to roll with Taylor Heinicke at quarterback with the season slipping away.

Coach Ron Rivera said that Fitzpatrick would have an MRI on his injured right hip in a couple of weeks, which would then allow the team to set a course for the 38-year-old’s return.

Rivera has never given a timeframe for Fitzpatrick to be back, though reports indicated it was a sixto-eight week injury, which would have had him playing sooner rather than later. Instead, Heinicke is expected to make his eighth career NFL start Sunday at Denver. COVID-19 UPDATE >> Bears coach Matt Nagy says he has tested positive for COVID-19. Nagy, who is vaccinated, announced the result during a Zoom call minutes after his usual in-person session was switched.

“I feel pretty good,” he said from his car.

• The Packers likely will have to face the unbeaten Cardinals without 2020 All-Pro receiver Davante Adams and defensive coordinator Joe Barry due to COVID-19.

• The Falcons activated offensive lineman Kaleb McGary from the COVID-19 reserve list.
