White fills in nicely as Jets down Bengals

-

Mike White threw for 405 yards and three touchdowns in his first NFL start, leading the host New York Jets to a wild 34-31 comeback victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

White, starting in place of injured rookie Zach Wilson, pulled off an improbable victory for the Jets (25) while going 37 of 45 — setting an NFL record for the most completions in a player’s first start.

Joe Burrow threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns for the Bengals (5-3), who led 31-20 midway through the fourth quarter.

The Jets got an acrobatic touchdown by Ty Johnson, who took a short pass from White and tip-toed down the left sideline and reached over the goal line for a 19-yard score to cut it to 31-26 with 4:36 left.

Shaq Lawson then came up with the Jets’ first interception of the year to give them the ball at the Bengals 14.

White found a wide-open Tyler Kroft in the back of the end zone to give New York a one-point lead. The Jets converted the 2-point conversion when Jamison Crowder tossed it to a wide-open White in the end zone. RAMS 38, TEXANS 22 >> Matthew Stafford threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns in three quarters, and Los Angeles dominated Houston.

BRONCOS 17, WASHINGTON 10 >> Melvin Gordon III caught a touchdown pass and ran for the go-ahead score from 7 yards out with 4:31 remaining, and Denver (4-4) blocked two field goals on its way to beating Washington (26) to end a four-game losing streak.

STEELERS 15, BROWNS 10 >> Ben Roethlisberger threw a touchdown pass and rookie Najee Harris had an 8-yard TD run after halftime as Pittsburgh (4-3) beat host Cleveland,

The Browns (4-4) had plenty of chances, but wide receiver Jarvis Landry had a costly fumble and then couldn’t handle two passes from Baker Mayfield in the final 6:04.

BILLS 26, DOLPHINS 11 >> Josh Allen shook off a shaky first half to throw touchdown passes to Gabriel Davis and Stefon Diggs on consecutive second-half drives, and Buffalo (5-2) beat Miami (1-7) for a series-record seventh consecutive time.
