Man wounded, infant daughter hurt in West Oakland weekend gunfire

Supporters raise funds to defray costs for surgery, other family expenses

A man holding his infant child inside his West Oakland home last weekend was wounded in the face by a bullet fired from outside the home, authorities said.

The 5-week-old girl suffered some cuts, but investigators have not yet been able to conclusively determine if they were caused by breaking glass or something else.

The 49-year-old man, who lives with his husband and their other child, a 4-year-old girl, remained hospitalized Tuesday.

The shooting was reported about 7:40 p.m. Saturday at the home near 10th and Peralta streets in the city’s Prescott neighborhood.

The man was holding the baby and was looking outside a window when at least 10 shots were fired toward the home and he was hit in the face, authorities said.

His husband, their other child and another person in the house were not hurt. They have relocated to another residence.

Police have not yet determined a motive for the shooting and have not released descriptions of possible suspects.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $7,500 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the shooter or shooters. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3426 or Crime Stoppers at 510777-8572.

According to a summary shared on a GoFundMe online fundraising account, the victim is expected to have several more surgeries, “is surrounded by loved ones and doing the best he can given the circumstances.”

His husband, according to the posting, “is now working to put the pieces of his life and family together. This amazing family is loved by so many, the outpouring of support has been tremendous.

“The fund is being started to help with all of the expenses that will be incurred” as the family finds a new home, rents a car while the one it has is repaired and pays day care costs for the children and medical expenses for the wounded man once he is released from the hospital.

The family hopes to get answers as to why the home was targeted, but for now “the focus is on stabilizing the entire family,” the posting says.

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday $54,805 had been raised, surpassing a $50,000 goal.
