INNESCAPABLE: 3 OF THE NEWEST HOTEL OPENINGS AT LAKE TAHOE
Ski season is upon us. If you’re looking for new lodging options in the Lake Tahoe area, here are two new hotels and resorts — and a third on its way this spring.
WYLD TIMES
South of Tahoe, Wylder Hope Valley opened its doors mid-pandemic on the 165-acre spread formerly known as Sorenson’s. Reimagined and refreshed with 27 renovated, Scandinavian-inspired cabins, yurts, campsites and a restored midcentury Spartan trailer, the resort made the Travel + Leisure It List of best new hotels earlier this year.
Sorenson’s Cafe serves up seasonal, elevated fare (lunch entrees are in the $15-$20 range, dinner entrees are $28-$48), and the General Store offers provisions, including wine and pastries, as well as a casual cafe menu ($7-$16) including breakfast burritos, burgers, quesadillas and fish tacos.
Winter recreation possibilities include snowshoeing, sledding, crosscountry skiing and hot toddies by the fire. Rooms start at $275, plus a $30 resort fee. Find details on the resort, 14255 Highway 88 in Hope Valley, at wylderhotels.com.
TRUCKEE’S NEW MARRIOTT
There’s nothing indie or mountain chalet-like about Truckee’s Springhill Suites, of course: This is a Marriott Bonvoy property. But this all-suite, three-story hotel, which opened last year, is just off Highway 80 and conveniently close to both Truckee’s historic downtown and the North Shore’s ski resorts.
Rooms, which start at $153, boast king or queen size beds plus a sofa or trundle bed. Kids stay free. And breakfast is included. Find the hotel at 10640 Jibboom St. in Truckee; springhillsuites. marriott.com.
COMING SOON: DESOLATION NON-WILDERNESS
Japanese zen meets Scandinavian design at the Desolation Hotel, a micro resort set to open in South Lake Tahoe next May. The hotel includes 21 suites, studios and townhomes, all with kitchenettes, fireplaces and Frette linens. Balconies boast soaking tubs, and communal amenities include an outdoor saltwater pool, a fitness studio and a dog lounge, as well as beach access.
The hotel and its Maggie’s Restaurant & Bar, which hail from the same team behind Wylder Hope Valley, are taking over the old Tahoe Villa Motel at 933 Poplar St. just a couple minutes’ walk from the beach, Heavenly Village and the music, dining and casinorelated attractions in Stateline. Rooms start at $450. Find more details at www.desolationhotel. com.
