OAKLAND >> Two men died early Friday after gunfire broke out in two Oakland neighborhoods, police said.

One of the shootings happened late Thursday in East Oakland, and a 22-year-old died at a hospital from his injuries about 12:22 a.m. Friday, police said. Officers found the second victim, a 38-year-old, about 12:23 a.m. in West Oakland.

The two deaths bring to 43 the number of homicides investigated by the Oakland Police Department this year. The California Highway Patrol also has investigated two fatal freeway shootings that happened within city limits.

Police found the victim in the West Oakland shooting in the 3000 block of Chestnut Street. Officers found him on the street with at least one bullet wound and pronounced him dead.

The East Oakland shooting happened about 7:25 p.m. Police responded to reports of ShotSpotter activity in the 3600 block of Foothill Boulevard in the city's Fruitvale neighborhood.

When officers arrived, they found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound and called for paramedics. An ambulance rushed him to a hospital, where he died.

Investigators said they believed the man was shot during a confrontation with a gunman who fled the scene before officers' arrival. No one was in custody in connection with the shooting late Thursday, and investigators did not release a suspect or associated vehicle description.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to an arrest in either of the shootings. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stoppers at 510777-8572.
