Off-duty cop shoots man, who's in hospital
A man was hospitalized after an off-duty Oakland police officer shot him more than once in an encounter Wednesday morning in a West Oakland neighborhood.
Sources told the Bay Area News Group that the officer had shot the man after he allegedly brandished a gun at the officer. Officer Kim Armstead, a spokeswoman for the department, did not specifically say whether the officer and the suspect had exchanged gunfire, citing the ongoing investigation.
In an impromptu news conference, Armstead said officers responded around 9:30 a.m. to the officer's call reporting a shooting involving a person they believed was armed in the 800 block of 35th Street near Market Street in the city's HooverFoster neighborhood.
Soon after, officers responded and spoke to the officer, who was not injured. A search of the area yielded a loaded firearm. Shortly after that, a person suffering from multiple gunshot wounds arrived at an area hospital. That person later was listed in stable condition, Armstead said.
Police declined to share any information about what led to the encounter, or identify the officer, or state how long that person had served on the force.
“We don't want to say too much,” Armstead said, citing an ongoing investigation multiple times. That investigation will include the department's homicide section and internal affairs division, as well as the city's community police review agency. The officer was placed on paid administrative leave, as is protocol.
A nearby school campus for Hoover Elementary, 890 Brockhurst St., briefly was placed on lockdown, but reopened without issue, the spokeswoman said.
