City records year's first fatal traffic collision as 53-year-old is killed
Injuries to teen driving other car not life-threatening
A vehicle collision that killed a 53-yearold man and left a teen driver injured remains under investigation Wednesday, authorities said.
In a statement, police said dispatchers received 911 calls about a two-vehicle collision shortly before 8:30 a.m. Monday at Niles Boulevard and Hillview Drive.
When officers and firefighters responded to the scene, they found a man trapped inside one vehicle and worked to extricate him. Despite emergency lifesaving measures, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Alameda County Sheriff's Office coroner's bureau identified him Wednesday night as Erik Mora.
The other vehicle's driver, identified as a 19-year-old Fremont resident, managed to climb out of his own vehicle and was taken to a hospital for treatment of nonlife-threatening injuries.
According to preliminary information gathered by investigators based on witness interviews, the teen's vehicle was heading southbound along Niles Boulevard and approaching Hillview, where the man's eastbound vehicle was turning left onto Niles. The teen's vehicle broadsided the man's vehicle, knocking both into a parked and unoccupied vehicle. The teen's vehicle came to rest at a curb, and the man's vehicle came to rest against a home, causing minor damage, police said.
Police said either alcohol or substances may have been collision factors but said an investigation will rely on pending toxicology reports and search warrants for medical records.
The collision is the city's first traffic fatality of the year. The city logged seven last year, fewer than 2021's nine, and has worked to lower its numbers through multiple interventions.
