FACTS OF THE DAY

• Hunting, habitat destruction and interbreeding with domestic cattle nearly brought bison to extinction in the United States. By 1913, one of the few remaining groups of pure bison was living at a zoo in New York City. Fourteen of them were shipped to Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota to help reestablish herds in the Great Plains.

• Founded in 1908with just nine members at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Alpha Kappa Alpha is the oldest Greek-letter organization for African American collegiate women. Among its notable alumnae are actress Phylicia Rashad and the three NASA mathematicians portrayed in the 2016film “Hidden Figures,” Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson.
