Former 49er star Sherman arrested on DUI suspicion

Former 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman was arrested early Saturday in Seattle on suspicion of driving under the influence, according to the Washington State Patrol.

No other details about the arrest were immediatel­y available, said Trooper Rick Johnson, a patrol spokespers­on.

A spokespers­on for the King County Prosecutor's Office said nothing had been sent to their office yet indicating if charges would be filed, the Seattle Times reported.

It was not immediatel­y clear if Sherman had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

Sherman spent much of his NFL career with the Seattle Seahawks. He also played for the 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He more recently has worked as a football analyst.

Sherman in 2022 pleaded guilty in Seattle to two misdemeano­r charges stemming from a drunken driving and domestic disturbanc­e the year before. He also admitted to a criminal infraction of speeding in a roadway constructi­on zone. The former BYU star spent seven seasons in the NFL with Dallas, Chicago and Denver. His deep-play prowess was especially evident in the 1978 Super Bowl against Denver. With the Cowboys ahead 20-10 in the fourth quarter, fullback Robert Newhouse threw a 29-yard TD pass to Richards.

BIENIEMY EXPECTED TO JOIN UCLA STAFF >> Eric Bieniemy is on the verge of returning home for his next job. The former Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Commanders offensive coordinato­r is expected to become UCLA's associate head coach and offensive coordinato­r, two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

Bieniemy is the first significan­t hire for new UCLA coach DeShaun Foster, who was hired on Feb. 12 after Chip Kelly left Westwood to become Ohio State's offensive coordinato­r.

Bieniemy, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs, spent the past season in Washington. He wasn't retained by new Commanders coach Dan Quinn, who replaced Ron Rivera.

Bieniemy is returning to UCLA, where he spent three seasons as an assistant from 2003-05.

MCDOWELL EARNS FIRST NASCAR CUP POLE >> Michael McDowell captured his first NASCAR Cup Series pole in his 467th career start.

Following a close runner-up finish in last week's Daytona 500 qualifying, McDowell edged Joey Logano in qualifying for today's race. McDowell was first with a fast lap of 178.844 miles per hour on Atlanta Motor Speedway's 1.54-mile track. Logano continued another strong day for Ford drivers by claiming the No. 2 spot at 174.424 mph.

McDowell, 39, won the 2021 Daytona 500. His only other Cup Series win came at Indianapol­is in 2023.

GONZALEZ EARNS CHAMPIONS MEMBERSHIP >> Ricardo Gonzalez of Argentina ran off four straight birdies on the back nine and closed with a 3-under 70 for a one-shot victory in the Trophy Hassan II at Rabat, Morocco, giving him membership on the PGA Tour Champions for the first time.
