Wildcats have ‘big guy day’ in practice

EL DORADO - El Dorado's football coaches turned their attention to the big 'uns Tuesday afternoon. Coach Scott Reed focused on the offensive and defensive lines and liked what he saw.

"Today was big guy day," said Reed. "We do 7-on-7 and throwroute stuff all year. There's only a certain number of days you get to put pads on. Today, we spent the first 35 minutes with just the linemen. We got some great work. I thought the kids responded real well. We got some technique things done, some step stuff that was beneficial.

"We needed to rep stuff. We needed to rep how you play a down block, how you play a reach block, staying in the right gap and then pass protection­s, where you're attacking and get-offs, hand-andeye placement - all kinds of stuff. It just helps having more eyes on them."

The Wildcats went through inside drill, had a team period and looked at kickoff return and perimeter run game. But, everything in football begins in the trenches.

"You have a limited number of days in practice where you can get better. That's so important that we decided to split up practice," said Reed. "They went out the first 35 minutes and it was just (offensive) linemen and (defensive) linemen. Some of it was agility stuff. Some of it was technique stuff. Some of it was full line drills and some of it was one-on-one drills. It was good stuff. Honestly, when we got through, the kids were smoked and tired but you've got to get tired. If you're a defensive lineman, it's an all-out effort every play."

Defensivel­y, Lake Tucker and Terry Hampton both had their moments.
