If you need me, you know where to find me

-

Finally, after waiting months, weeks and days, bow season opens Saturday!

I know all of my fellow arrow slingers are just as excited, even though the temperatures are about 10-15 degrees warmer than what is desirable.

Just fire up the Thermacell, wear a t-shirt and hope for the best!

I have been hitting the indoor range at Slingin’ Arrows quite a bit lately.

Nothing makes you feel better than putting five arrows in a tight group at 20-25 yards.

Gives you instant confidence, knowing that if ol’ big boy steps out, you will drill him right through the lungs.

Humane kill, short blood trail and meat in the freezer makes for a great day.

I am already getting excited just thinking about it.

After looking at thousands of pictures of deer, hogs, raccoons, a fox, a young bobcat, some squirrels and a very suspicious rabbit, I can say that my excitement to watch the world wake up Saturday morning is like that of a small child on Christmas morning.

It isn’t about seeing that buck you really want or even filling a tag.

The fact that I can get away from every day stress, my normal routine, put my phone on silent and enjoy being in the woods is most important to me.

Some people do yoga, paint, make crafts or do Pinterest projects as a way to relax.

I pick up my bow or my gun and go outside where there is no Internet and no phone service.

I promise you will find a better connection with yourself when you are 20 feet off the ground or in a blind in a thicket.

Having my son with me makes even better memories.

He wants to go with me Saturday, but I have only one seat.

I’m hoping one day I can rig him a seat to watch me at full draw.

He is happy to go to a big ground blind with me just to watch all of the birds, squirrels and other wildlife.

He loves to learn what bird made each call he heard and what kind of tree that is with the big bright yellow leaves that the squirrels are all over.

He learns hickory nuts are one of their favorite foods and wants to pick one up off the ground to take home.

These are things that kids won’t learn in school.

For my fellow archers, please be careful this weekend.

Please wear your safety harness.

One slip doesn’t have to be your last.

A bruised armpit from a harness in a fall is way better than a broken back while you lie on the ground at dark, hoping your buddies realize you never made it back to your truck.

Please make sure at least your spouse and a fellow hunter knows where your stand is and the area you will be located.

It is cool in the mornings and it warms up quickly so keep your eyes peeled for snakes.

I saw two cottonmouths on opening day of bow season last year.

Rocks, logs, creeks and stands all have places for them to hide. Watch where you step.

Above all, have fun and be careful.

Have a great weekend! Send in those pictures of your bow kills next week!

First bow kill is something to be proud of!

Send them to katiem@ eldoradonews.com or send them to my Facebook as a PM.

Happy hunting everyone and WOO PIG SOOIE!
