Deadline for SAAC 2016 Editorial Cartoon Contest has been extended

-

EL DORADO – The South Arkansas Arts Center has extended the deadline for Editorial Cartoon Contest entries to Sept. 30, according to Susan Harper at the arts center.

“Join in on this year’s political fervor, win cash awards and a chance to have your thought-provoking work published in the El Dorado NewsTimes,” SAAC visual arts liaison Kelly Campbell said. “We’ve made two big changes that I’m very excited about! The first, which affects all entries, is that you can enter individually or as a collaborative effort. Sometimes people have great ideas, but aren’t comfortable with their drawing skills; so if you have great idea, find a friend who can draw and get that person to make your idea come to life – then enter as a collaborative cartoon.”

“The other change is that we will publish entries as ‘anonymous’ so that you won’t alienate your friends and family,” she said.

Create an editorial or political cartoon about any current event or political campaign issue of local or national interest. Judging will be based on originality, clear expression of a point of view and visual presentation using one or more of the tools of a political cartoonist.

Cash awards will be given for Best of Show and first, second and third places in each division as selected by Dr. Jay Barth form Hendrix College in Conway. Ronnie Bell, general manager of the El Dorado News-Times, will select one piece from the exhibit for the Editor’s Choice Award, which includes a cash award. Bell will select additional cartoons for publication in the newspaper.

The contest is open to everyone as single artist cartoons or collaborative cartoons. The two divisions are adults and students (grades nine-12). Entries must be original and unpublished and any number of entries may be submitted at $5 each. Artwork may be either black and white or color, and may be either handdrawn or digitally created. Multiple panels are accepted as one entry, but digital submissions must include all panels on the same file.

Cartoons will be on exhibit in the SAAC’s Lobby Gallery Oct. 3-27, with an awards reception on from 5 until 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 11. The cartoon contest is sponsored by William P. Cook and Associates and the El Dorado News-Times.
