Lady Trojans advance to district final

PARKERS CHAPEL Parkers Chapel scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and downed Harmony Grove 6-5 in the district softball tournament. The Lady Trojans improved to 21-5 and advanced to today’s final against Rison, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

Spring Hill plays Harmony Grove today at noon in the third place game.

The Lady Hornets led 5-4 before Courtney Phelps hit a solo home run in the fifth to tie the game. With one out in the sixth, Savannah Slaughter legged out a double to right field. She went to third on a passed ball before Kylie Jones hit a deep fly ball to left. The ball was caught in foul territory. Slaughter tagged up on the play and scored without a throw.

“I’m glad our girls responded and came back to win. I knew it was going to be tough. We dug ourselves a hole but we fought to the end and that was the difference in the game,” said Parkers Chapel coach Justin Welch. “Harmony Grove is a solid team. I knew this was a key game because the other side of hte region is really tough. We did what we needed to to win the game.”

The Lady Hornets scored three runs in the

first before the Lady Trojans got four in the third. Harmony Grove grabbed the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth.

Phelps was the winning pitcher, striking out nine with no walks. She allowed nine hits and five earned runs.

At the plate, Savannah Jones and Kenlee McAuliffee both went 2-for-3 and drove in a run. Kylie Jones was 1-for-2 with a RBI. Allison Rogers, Phelps and Slaughter had the other hits for Parkers Chapel.

The tournament is being held at Parkers Chapel.
