Rison staves off Lady Trojans

PARKERS CHAPEL - Parkers Chapel rallied from a five-run deficit before Rison scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to win 9-8 Saturday in the 2A 7-East District Tournament championsh­ip game.

The game was halted by stormy weather in the fourth inning with Rison leading 5-0. Approximat­ely two hours later, the teams got back on the field.

"It really probably benefitted us," said Parkers Chapel coach Justin Welch. "The kids were down and I talked to them about it. It gave them a chance to say, hey, just loosen up and play softball and do what they do."

Rison's Kristen Hurst opened the scoring with a solo home run over the centerfiel­d fence in the bottom of the second inning.

The Lady Wildcats opened it up in the third. Two errors and a bunt loaded the bases. Courtney Phelps got a strikeout but Kennedy Ratliff singled in a run. Julie Beck followed with a two-run single.

Trailing 8-2, the Lady Trojans scored six in the sixth. Kenlee McAuliffee tripled to right. KaylinWall­er walked and stolesecon­d before Bailey Norwood plated a run with a single to center. Savannah Slaughter's single drove in a run. Kylie Jones reached on a fielder's choice before Jaycie Burns singled. Phelps' single drove in a run before Savannah Jones tied the game witha tworun double, which scored courtesy runners Kameron Cross and T.K. Burson.

The Lady Wildcats answered when Ratliff reached on an error and scored from first when Beck drilled a line drive off the top of the fence in centerfiel­d.

Hurst was the winning pitcher, allowing 10 hits with four walksand six strikeouts. Phelps took the loss, surrenderi­ng 10 hits and two walks with four strikeouts.

Slaughter was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Phelps and Savannah Jones had two hits apiece.

Parkers Chapel, which fell to 21-6, will play Thursday in the regional tournament, beginning at 5:30 p.m. against Murfreesbo­ro. The regional will be held at Magnet Cove.
