Ann Edmondson to speak at genealogy meeting

EL DORADO — Ann Dysart Edmondson will share her book, “Scotland Presbyterian Church – Union County, Arkansas – Session Records 1846-1905; Transcription and the Family Roots of Scotland Presbyterian Church,” when the Union County Genealogical Society meets at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the South Arkansas Community College Library Auditorium. Guests are invited to attend.

Edmondson is from Texas and has done genealogical research for about 40 years – much about the families in the New England area, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. In the last 20 years, she started researching her husband’s ancestors, which included families from North Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.

According to a news release sent by Janice Fournier, publicity chair for the Union County Genealogical Society, Edmondson’s research on her husband’s family roots in the Union County area, “eventually led her to the writing of her book.” She and her husband lived in El Dorado for a period of time and still own a house here. While residing in El Dorado, they attended the First Presbyterian Church and often visited relatives at Scotland Presbyterian.

During one of these visits, Edmondson found an old Session Book and received permission to take it home to read and hunt for ancestor names. She received permission to scan the pages of the book and bind them to help preserve the information she had located.

“Ann found a treasure trove of information in the old Session records from the church, which took her about three years to study, index, cross reference and glean marriage records, cemetery records, printed obituaries, newspapers and other reference materials to incorporate in the writing of her book,” Fournier said.
