Congressman Bruce Westerman meets with EHS students
Republican Congressman Bruce Westerman came to El Dorado High School to speak to students who are interested in both politics and community service, as well as give students an opportunity to ask him questions about his job and different
policies.
Westerman, who encourages students to get involved in service, was given a brief presentation by the Arkansas Student Leadership Initiative (ASLI) in which two student representatives spoke to him about how the group makes an impact on the community through service and volunteering.
The visit this past Wednesday also offered students with more
liberal leanings the chance to listen to a republican speak at EHS and to hear different views
and share their opinions.
“I am excited that he is willing to work with students and connect with educators,” said Nicole Hellthaler, U.S. Government teacher. “It is easy to think that government is some crazy concept that works and operates far away from us. This shows students that government is closer to our lives than we realize. It could also inspires students to work in government some day,” said Hellthaler.
With a background in engineering and foresting, Westerman may seem to some an unlikely candidate for Congress. In a way, he actually got his start in community service. Because of the service he was doing for his community through his church, he was elected to be on his local school board. From there, his passion for helping others wound up getting him a seat in Congress.
The congressman ended his talk by urging us students to get, and stay, involved in our communities.
