ROBERT E. MARTIN Robert “Bob” Eugene Martin, 84, completed his earthly course on July 15, 2017.

He is the child of Austin and Dollie Rowland Martin, born on

Aug. 27,

1932 in Warner

Brown Hospital. He started life as a preemie of two pounds in a time when his odds of surviving were unfavorable. Warner Brown Hospital’s neo natal care consisted of a box with light bulbs to keep premature babies warm. His parents could not take him home until Austin built a similar unit to use at home.

Bob graduated from El Dorado High School in 1950. His career took him and his family to live in Shreveport, Miami, Chicago, New York, New Orleans, San Antonio and Pleasanton, California, but when he retired, he returned to his roots in El Dorado. He was of the Baptist faith.

Bob developed an interest in airplanes at an early age when a family friend took him for a flight from the El Dorado Downtown airport. This interest later developed into a career as a flight engineer for Eastern Airlines in Miami, Florida. He enjoyed flying on the Constellation planes (affectionately called “Connies.”) In fact, he wanted to name his daughter, Connie, but this name was vetoed and she was named Kathryn Lynn instead. Later he flew Douglas DC 10s for WORLD Airways in California and spend the next 25 years traveling to all parts of the world. He was stationed in Indonesia and Mali for several months. He flew some of the last flights out of Da Nang in 1975.

He enjoyed his boat, Sundowner, and camping with family and friends in California rivers and lakes. He enjoyed country music and had a sense of humor. He loved his family and the family pets, Pepper and Zeke. His last words were to inquire about them. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to UCAPS in his name.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Dollie Rowland Martin.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Wilda; his daughter, Kathryn Nielsen (Preben); and granddaughter, Ashley Nielsen.

There will be a celebration of life for Bob at 11 a.m. on July 20 at Perry’s Funeral Chapels.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday before the celebration of life. Cremation services were entrusted to Perry’s Funeral Chapels.
