El Dorado properties considered for Arkansas Register of Historic Places
LITTLE ROCK — Three El Dorado properties will be considered for listing on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places, when the State Review Board of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program meets on Aug. 2 at the Department of Arkansas Heritage Building in Little Rock. The board will also consider nine properties for nomination to the National Register of Historic Places.
The El Dorado properties include:
• The former YWCA Building at 118 Peach St., which now houses the office for the Boy Scouts of America - DeSoto Area Council. The building is a 1938 Colonial Revival-style building constructed through the Works Progress Administration, a Depression-era federal relief program.
• Memorial Stadium at 1205 N. West Ave., a 1946 concrete stadium designed by El Dorado Architect John Abbott.
• The former American Legion Building, which now houses the TAC (Teenage Club) House at 1101 N. West Ave., a circa 1946 architectural concrete structure also designed by Abbott.
The board will also consider the Linwood Cemetery at Paragould in Greene County and the Bush House at Hot Springs in Garland County for listing on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places. The Arkansas Register recognizes historically significant properties that do not meet National Register requirements.
Properties to be considered for National Register nomination are Darragh Building and Governor’s Mansion Historic District Boundary Expansion at Little Rock, Dr. Charles H. Kennedy House in North Little Rock and West-Blazer House near Jacksonville in Pulaski County; Jewel Bain House No. 4 at Pine Bluff in Jefferson County; Arkansas Research Test Station near Caddo Gap in Montgomery County; Pernot House at Van Buren in Crawford County; Johnson-Portis House at West Memphis in Crittenden County, and Scull Historic District at Conway in Faulkner County.
