Bulldogs topple Hamburg’s JV
STRONG - Desmond Newton ran for a pair of touchdowns, as Strong scored 24 first-quarter points en route to a 30-0 win over Hamburg JV in their season opener on Friday night.
The game was ended early in the fourth quarter after a Hamburg player was injured while trying to make a tackle.
He was flown to a hospital in Shreveport.
The Bulldogs scored after recovering the opening kickoff and drove 37 yards to paydirt with X-Zavier McHenry scoring on a 4-yard run to make it 6-0.
Newton then ran in the twopoint conversion to extend the lead to 8-0.
A senior, Newton helped set up the Bulldogs’ second scoring drive with a good return on a punt.
Newton himself capped the drive with a 5-yard run, and LeAndrew Greer added the two-point conversion to give the Bulldogs a 16-0 lead.
Strong’s defense then got into the act, as Brady Pratt recovered a fumble and raced 75 yards for a touchdown, and Newton’s second successful two-point conversion of the period gave the Bulldogs a 24-0 lead.
The score would remain unchanged until the second half.
On the opening possession of the third period, Newton capped a seven-minute drive with his second touchdown run of the game that ended the scoring in the contest.
“I thought we played extremely well defensively,” said Strong coach Greg Anthony. “Holding them scoreless was a big deal. They really responded and did everything that we had gone over. Offensively, we have some stuff to correct, but it’s nothing that can’t be corrected.”
