Bruins burn Bucks

-

News-Times Staff SEARCY - After topping Harmony Grove in their season opener, Week 2 wasn’t nearly as kind to Smackover, as the Bucks fell at Harding Academy 49-21 on Friday night.

Davis Morgan had a superb game for the Wildcats (2-0), going 19-0f-29 passing for 394 yards and six touchdowns in the win.

Early on, it looked like the 2017 contest between the Bucks (1-1) and Wildcats would resemble last year’s clash that saw Smackover jump out to a 27-0 lead en route to a 41-21 win.

On the first play of the game, Roshard Boone threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Corbin Lee that made it 7-0 with Harley Williams’ successful extra point.

However, the Wildcats scored 42 unanswered points to take control of the contest.

The Wildcats tied the game at the 9:18 mark of

the opening period on a 13-yard strike from Morgan to Dalton Koch.

Harding Academy took their first lead with 2:08 left in the opening period on a 39-yard connection from Morgan to Peydon Harlow, the first of three scores the duo combined for.

Leading 14-7 after the opening period, the Wildcats extended their lead with a pair of scores in the second quarter.

Morgan threw his third touchdown pass of the half, an 8-yard strike to Harlow, to give the Wildcats a 21-7 edge.

Jordan Ashmore then gave the Wildcats their lone rushing touchdown of the game, scoring on a 27-yard run with 4:48 to play in the first half.

Up 28-7 at intermission, the Wildcats scored twice in just under three minutes to begin the scoring in the third quarter.

Morgan threw touchdown passes of 24 and 14 yards to Koch and Harlow respectively to make it 42-7.

Smackover dented the scoreboard in the third period on a 3-yard run by Dexter Crockett with 3:59 to play to make it 42-13, but Morgan capped his big night moments later by tossing a 50-yard touchdown pass to Harlow.

Crockett scored on a 5-yard run in the fourth quarter, and his run to make the two-point conversion successful ended the scoring.

Harlow finished with seven catches for 107 yards and three touchdowns, while Travis Turley hauled in seven passes for 140 yards for the Wildcats.

Koch chipped in with 73 yards and two touchdowns on four receptions.

Boone finished 6-of-19 passing for 110 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. He also had 21 yards rushing on nine carries.

Bryce Lockhart went 2-of-3 passing for 10 yards and an interception.

Crockett led the Bucks’ ground game with 78 yards and two touchdowns on five carries.

Lee had 35 yards on five carries in addition to his touchdown catch.
