Library Card Sign-Up Month recognized

It’s September, which means that both the South Arkansas Community College Library and the Barton Library are recognizing National Library Card Sign-Up Month — and, in a collaborative effort between the two facilities, new patrons will have an opportunity to win prizes just for getting library cards.

According to a Pew Research report produced a year ago, roughly 68 percent of Americans have a library card and 48 percent of Americans visited a public library or bookmobile in 20152016 — but local librarians want those numbers to push higher.

“Libraries are among the most valuable resources accessible to modern society,” SouthArk Library director Philip Shackelford said. “September is just another opportunity to recognize and celebrate that value.”

And in doing so, have a chance to get something else valuable: Anyone who signs up for a library card at either Barton or SouthArk in September will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card to Jefferson Street Books in El Dorado.

One gift card will be awarded at each library, so anyone who signs up for a library card at both libraries will have the chance to win both prizes.

The drawing will take place Thursday.

Earlier this year, directors from both libraries met and signed a memorandum of understanding designed to improve “services, reach, development and effectiveness” so that both libraries could continue their work in providing “community growth, progress and quality of life.”

More than just providing books, libraries have the power to transform both individuals and communities Shackelford said.

“They are places to quench curiosity, to pursue new boundaries and to explore ideas, hobbies and careers,” he said.

“Librarians across the country believe that everyone should have access to the tools and content they need to broaden their horizons, enrich their lives and provide for their future.”
