Barton improves to 5-0 with win over Bryant

-

News-Times Staff Barton's eighth-grade football team continued its perfect run on Thursday, as the Wildkittens topped Bryant 26-7 at Memorial Stadium to improve to 5-0.

Barton's defense came up with a big play early on, as Lamonte Lewis intercepted a pass on the 1-yard line to end a drive.

But after a scoreless first quarter, Bryant took the lead with a score early in the second period to take a 7-0 lead.

However, on the ensuing kickoff, Jackie Washington got free and raced 83 yards to paydirt to get the Wildkittens on the scoreboard.

Trailing 7-6, the Wildkittens took the lead for good later in the stanza.

Sharmon Rester, who would play a vital role later in the second half, threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Washington to give Barton a 12-7 lead at intermission.

Rester then took matters over from there, scoring on a 5-yard run in the third quarter before scoring on a 10-yard run in the fourth quarter that allowed the Wildkittens to pull away.

Jyrin Steward capped the scoring in the contest with a successful run on the two-point conversion after Rester's second touchdown run of the half.

In addition to his big night on offense and special teams, Washington also came up with a big play on defense by recovering a fumble.

Hayden Brady also recovered a fumble for the Wildkittens, who are idle next week before traveling to Little Rock Christian to take on Mountain Home on Oct. 12.

LADY WARRIORS FALL IN FIVE SETS West Side Christian's volleyball team won the first two sets, but Cornerstone Christian Academy rallied to win the next three sets to top the Lady Warriors by scores of 23-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-15 and 15-12.
