Recreational complex
To the Editor:
I have worked in economic development and local government management and I was very pleased a few days ago to see the proposal to enlarge our recreation complex for tournaments. And I believe I saw a water park mentioned in the article. I support this idea of establishing recreational enterprises and “districts.” If I had money to invest, I would be contacting the owner of our movie theater, bowling alley and skating rink and saying, “Hey, let’s locate together; like an activity mall. We could establish ourselves as THE Family Place to Be in South Arkansas.”
I know that some really want manufacturing. But since the 1980s when China developed agreements with Walmart and others to manufacture goods using their cheap labor, manufacturing has been moving at a fast pace to Third World countries. Until labor and people of good will insist that labor all over the world be paid fair wages to afford even lower middle-class access to housing, health care and consumer goods, manufacturing will continue to move to countries where labor costs are the cheapest. There are other issues involved, but space for letters to the editor is limited.
And thinking of highway access; our distance from I-20 is really not that great. If you are in a typical American large city, you can easily be 35 to 50 miles from a location that you wish to go to. Many daily drive across their cities for work, recreation or church without giving it a thought.
