Gasol, Grizzlies build big lead, hang on to beat Golden State

-

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Marc Gasol had 34 points and 14 rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies built a 19-point third-quarter lead over Golden State before holding on to beat the defending champion Warriors 111-101 on Saturday night.

James Ennis III added 13 points, and Tyreke Evans scored 12 as Memphis shot 47 percent compared to 39 percent for Golden State. The Warriors shot 12 of 38 from 3-point range.

Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 37 points, and Kevin Durant added 29 and 13 rebounds. But both were ejected with 43.6 seconds left after arguing with officials — Curry first after throwing his mouthpiece, and then Durant as he followed Curry's argument.

Klay Thompson finished with 14 points on 5 of 16 shooting, including 2 of 8 from outside the arc.

The Warriors trailed by 19 late in the third quarter and Curry was saddled with five fouls. Consecutive 3-pointers from Durant and an unintended tip-in by the Grizzlies, credited to David West, cut the deficit to single digits with just under 9 minutes left.

But Golden State never got close enough to catch the Grizzlies down the stretch.

The major burst for Memphis came early in the third quarter. The Grizzlies turned up their defense, forcing a trio of turnovers and scoring 15 straight points to stretch the lead to 18.

The Warriors connected on only 6 of 22 shots in the third, while Memphis went 10 of 18.

Spurs 87, Bulls 77

CHICAGO (AP) — LaMarcus Aldridge had 28 points and 10 rebounds and the San Antonio Spurs beat Chicago 87-77 on Saturday night in the Bulls' home opener.

Aldridge scored 12 points in a 22-13 run that gave San Antonio a 63-51 third-quarter lead. He signed a three-year contract extension a day before the season began.

Rudy Gay added 12 points for the Spurs, playing without All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard (right quadriceps tendinopathy).

Robin Lopez had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Bulls, also short-handed without power forwards Niko Mirotic (facial fractures, concussion) and Bobby Portis (suspension). Rookie Lauri Marakkanen, thrust into the starting lineup because of an incident in practice Tuesday that ultimately sidelined both Mirotic and Portis, had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Raptors 128, 76ers 94

TORONTO (AP) — DeMar DeRozan scored 30 points, Serge Ibaka had 21 and the Toronto Raptors won their 10th straight home game over Philadelphia, routing the 76ers 128-94 on Saturday night.

Kyle Lowry scored 17 points, Jakob Poeltl had a career-high 14 and the Raptors won for the 16th time in 17 meetings with the 76ers.

The 34-point margin of victory was Toronto's biggest ever over Philadelphia, eclipsing a 32-point win on Nov. 9, 2014.

DeRozan, who suffered flu-like symptoms earlier in the day, made eight of 12 field goal attempts and shot 14 for 16 from the free throw line.

DeRozan scored 15 in the first, going 4 for 4 from the field and hitting 7 of 8 free throws, to give the Raptors a 36-19 lead after one. Toronto made 14 of 16 free throw attempts in the first, taking advantage of 11 Philadelphia fouls.

The Raptors finished 31 for 37 at the line.

Ibaka had five 3-pointers and Lowry had four as Toronto shot 13 for 44 from long range.

Ben Simmons had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Jerryd Bayless scored 16 for the winless 76ers, who were playing the second game of a backto-back. Philadelphia lost at home to Boston on Friday night.

Justin Anderson had 12 points and Jahlil Okafor had 10.

Toronto's Jonas Valanciunas sprained his left ankle when he was fouled by Philadelphia's Dario Saric with two minutes left in the second. Valanciunas stayed in to shoot his free throws but was replaced about a minute later and headed to the locker room. He did not return.

Lucas Nogueira started the second half in place of Valanciunas.

Toronto led 62-49 at halftime and outscored Philadelphia 40-22 in the third to take a 101-71 lead into the fourth.

Heat 112, Pacers 108

MIAMI (AP) — The final horn sounded on the first Miami Heat home game of the season, and Dion Waiters walked toward midcourt with his hands held high over his head.

He was celebrating, and relieved.

Goran Dragic scored 23 points, Waiters added 19 and the Heat needed to scramble down the stretch to hold off the Indiana Pacers 112-108 on Saturday night. The Heat led by as many as 21 before seeing nearly all of that disappear in the final minutes.

"If you win by one, you got the win and that's all that matters," Waiters said. "We shouldn't have put ourselves in that situation."

James Johnson scored 14 points — including a pair of big free throws in the final seconds — and Kelly Olynyk added 13 for the Heat. Josh Richardson added 12 for Miami.

Victor Oladipo scored 28 points for Indiana, which got 18 from Domantas Sabonis and 14 from Thaddeus Young and Al Jefferson. The Pacers were outscored 37-19 in the second quarter to get into trouble, and nearly pulled off a comeback by outscoring Miami 32-21 in the fourth.

"Once we cut it down to 10 going into the fourth we were giving ourselves a chance," Young said. "This game we showed our fight and our effort but we came up a little short at the end."

Oladipo's stepback 3 with 25 seconds left cut Miami's lead to 109-106, before Richardson made one of two free throws for the Heat to make it a two-possession game again. Cory Joseph's runner with 12.9 seconds left bounced off the glass and dropped to get the Pacers within two — the closest the game was since the midpoint of the second quarter.

But Miami escaped, and avoided an 0-2 start.

"When we built the lead our defense was active, our deflections, hands, multiple efforts, that was more in the direction of how we want to get to with our identity," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "In the fourth quarter, it was more our offense getting us in trouble."

A 13-0 second-quarter burst proved big for the Heat, with Olynyk scoring eight points — including a pair of 3-pointers — during that run. Tyler Johnson had a pair of assists in that spurt, and he took a pass from James Johnson for a dunk that put Miami up 61-47 late in the half.

Dragic hit a 3-pointer to put Miami up 87-66 midway through the third. The Heat were outscored 42-25 the rest of the way.

"I thought we were a little winded in that first half but we got our second wind in the second half," Pacers coach Nate McMillan said.

Pistons 111, Knicks 107

NEW YORK (AP) — Tobias Harris scored 22 of his 31 points in the second half, and the Detroit Pistons erased a 21-point deficit to beat the New York Knicks 111107 on Saturday night.

Harris was one of the many Pistons who had little going to start the Pistons' second game in two nights, but they turned it around after halftime to spoil the Knicks' home opener.

Kristaps Porzingis scored 33 points, but New York fell to 0-2 after losing to former Knicks star Carmelo Anthony and Oklahoma City in its opener.

Andre Drummond had 21 points and 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who lost 115-111 in Washington on Friday night and seemed to have little energy left early Saturday.

But they were solid down the stretch, getting the tiebreaking three-point play from Reggie Jackson with 1:41 remaining. He closed it out four free throws in the final eight seconds and finished with 16 points.

Enes Kanter had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Knicks, who played without rookie Frank Ntilikina, the No. 8 pick from France who sprained his left ankle in practice Friday after playing just 7 1/2 minutes in the season opener.

The Knicks led 28-19 after one and quickly pushed it into double figures in the second, with the lead reaching 20 when Porzingis hit his second straight 3-pointer. It grew to 57-36 on Kanter's three-point play, and New York took a 64-51 advantage into halftime.

But Detroit outscored New York 28-16 in the third to trim the deficit to one point, then grabbed an 81-80 lead when Harris made a jumper for the first basket of the fourth.

Magic 114, Cavaliers 93

CLEVELAND (AP) — Nikola Vucevic scored 23 points and the Orlando Magic snapped a 17-game losing streak against the Cleveland Cavaliers, routing the defending Eastern Conference champions 114-93 on Saturday night.

Orlando's first win over Cleveland since Nov. 23, 2012 came in convincing fashion. The Magic never trailed and built a 21-point lead late in the first quarter. Orlando led 36-18 after the first, hitting 14 of 24 from the field.

The Magic, which made 14 of 35 3-pointers, took its biggest lead, 106-69, midway through the fourth quarter when both teams cleared their benches.

LeBron James scored 14 points in the first quarter and finished with 22 as the Cavaliers lost for the first time in three games.

Cleveland trailed 56-45 at halftime and cut the lead to 65-58 midway through the third when James blocked D.J. Augustin's drive and Dwyane Wade hit a 3-pointer. The Magic answered with a 12-0 run, including a bankedin 30-footer from Augustin and two baskets by Vucevic.

Vucevic, a night after scoring a career-high 41 points in a loss to Brooklyn, was 11 of 16 from the field.

Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue called timeout less than five minutes into the game when Orlando took a 15-4 lead. The Magic continued to build the margin, which reached 42-20 early in the second quarter on Bismack Biyombo's tipin.

Jonathon Simmons scored 19 points while Evan Fournier added 13 for Orlando. Iman Shumpert scored 21 points and Kevin Love had 18 for Cleveland.

Derrick Rose missed the game for Cleveland with a sprained left ankle. He twisted his ankle after being fouled by Milwaukee's Greg Monroe while driving to the basket on Friday.
