Union County gridiron standouts garner postseason accolades

The Great American Conference released its list of All-Conference performers for the 2017 football season. Ouachita Baptist University led the way with 17 selections, plus Coach of the Year in Todd Knight.

Four athletes from Union County earned honors, including three from OBU.

The Tigers’ Ernest Reed, Keandre Evans and Shaquille Hunter earned All-GAC honors along with Christian Jefferson of UA-Monticello.

Reed, a junior defensive tackle from El Dorado, and Evans, a sophomore cornerback from Junction City, were both named second-team all-conference for the Tigers. Hunter, a senior cornerback from Junction City, was named honorable mention.

Jefferson, a sophomore from El Dorado, earned a second-team selection after leading the Weevils in total tackles with 79 on the year.

Jefferson also ranked ninth in the GAC in tackles, and totaled a UAM high two intercepti­ons this season.

He added seven passes defended, two forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery to his stat-line as well.

For OBU, Reed has 27 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Evans is tied for second in the league with a total of 13 passes defended, including 11 pass breakups and two intercepti­ons.

Hunter has 45 tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack, one intercepti­on and nine passes defended.
