Storm could dump up to 4 inches of snow on southern Arkansas

Union County under winter storm warning until 6 p.m. tonight

Union County is under a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. tonight as an arctic blast was expected to send temperatur­es plummeting and could bring up to 4 inches of snow.

According to the National Weather Service, periods of heavy snow are expected, with 1 to 3 inches of snow anticipate­d, though that could climb to 4 inches. Tuesday morning is expected to be a hazardous commute, and drivers are encouraged to use caution on the road.

Much of the state is under either a winter storm warning or advisory through tonight, and about half the state could see snowfall totals between 2 and 3 inches. Forecaster­s also included northeast Texas and northwest Louisiana in the warning.

The National Weather Service advised those who must travel to keep an extra flashlight, food and water in the vehicle in case of an emergency. To get the latest road conditions, call 5-1-1.

Temperatur­es in parts of Arkansas and Oklahoma were expected to fall into the 20s Monday night. According to the NWS, snow is expected to gradually end by late today, but temperatur­es will remain below freezing with hard freeze conditions expected for tonight.

Temperatur­es are expected to warm later this week, with rain expected Thursday and into the weekend.

Several organizati­ons in Union County have reschedule­d meetings and events planned for today in anticipati­on of winter weather.

The United Way of Union County reschedule­d the annual meeting until 11:30 a.m. Jan. 23 at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall. To change a reservatio­n, contact its local office at 862-4903.

The Union County Water Conservati­on Board reschedule­d its meeting for 4 p.m. Jan. 24 in the fourth floor conference room of the Union County Courthouse.

The Union County criminal docket for Judge Robin Carroll will depend on the El Dorado School District. If the district closes school for the day, court will be canceled. If the district operates on a delayed start, the court will open at the same time as schools.

The El Dorado-Union County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event has been canceled for today and a new date and time will be announced.
