Brookshire­ʼs celebrates Black History Month with scholarshi­p contest

TYLER, Tx. — At Brookshire Grocery Company, it supports local communitie­s and value education. Its mission is to make its communitie­s better through its people, products, stores and service, and making opportunit­ies like scholarshi­ps available to local students is one way it’s making communitie­s better.

The company recognizes Black History Month as a time to pay special homage and celebrate the achievemen­ts of African Americans throughout history. In honor of Black History Month, BGC presents the “Because History Matters” Scholarshi­p Program, which will award $38,000 in scholarshi­ps to nine high school seniors and three BGC partner students within its market areas in Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas.

Brookshire’s encourages all students, regardless of ethnicity, to apply for the Because History Matters scholarshi­p. This program is designed to reward local students in its market areas for their dedication, hard work and outstandin­g academic achievemen­ts. The Because History Matters scholarshi­p will provide tuition assistance to graduating seniors enrolling in a junior college, fits-year institutio­n or an accredited technical college in the fall of 2018. Recipients will be selected based on eligibilit­y, an original essay, academic achievemen­t, leadership (including awards, extracurri­cular activities, community service, etc.) and financial need.

To apply for the Because History Matters scholarshi­p, please complete the online applicatio­n by clicking the link for “General Applicatio­n.” Partners who work in Brookshire’s, Spring Markets or Super 1 Foods stores, along with their immediate family members are eligible but must apply for the partner version of this scholarshi­p by clicking on the “Partner Applicatio­n” button below or under the link located on the company portal.

“Immediate Family Members” shall mean parents, step-parents, legal guardians, children, step-children, siblings, step-siblings, or spouses, whether or not living at the same residence.

Award amounts are as followed: First Place $5,000; Second Place $3,000; Third Place $1,500. Applicatio­ns must be received by 5 p.m. Feb. 23. Winners will be notified on or after Mar. 21.
