Opening day yields no results

-

Iwas excited to be able to work on opening day with having a new job.

Vacation time doesn't work out usually, but with one of my off days being Monday, I was lucky enough to enjoy a day in the woods.

Daylight came with the sounds of birds, squirrels and a few crows.

I was hoping the crows would stir up the turkeys into a frenzy, but the only sounds I heard were of logging equipment on some land close to us.

After 20 minutes, I decided I would have to move to another spot just to have a chance of hearing something besides machinery.

I arrived at another spot around 8 a.m. and ventured down the lane.

I had only been there about 30 minutes and I decided to stop and listen. The woods were silent other than the trickle of the creek in the background.

I let out five highpitched yelps and I was immediately answered by lover boy. He belted out his response like rolling thunder.

I could tell he was about 500-600 yards away, and I immediately tried to get set up.

I put Henrietta, my hen decoy, out just 20 steps from me and I sat down at the base of a pine tree awaiting his arrival.

I called again and he hammered out seven gobbles back to back to back. He was on his way.

I was so excited. After a few minutes he called to me again.

I answered and he let me know he was a lot closer.

He made it to about 200 yards out and he stopped.

After some sweet talking, he came in 50 yards closer and belted out 25-30 more gobbles.

I was sure he was going to come in to my decoy.

I then heard a few hens purring on the other side
