Smackover’s third annual Project Show and Auction Smackover’s third annual Project Show and Auction will be April 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Smackover High School cafeteria. Adult plates will be $9 and FFA members and kids 8-years-old and under, plates will be $6.

Auction items include: 16’ duck blind, 6’ by 8’ storage shed, 6’ by 10’ trailer, queen size bed, dining room table, picnic table, kid furniture, patio furniture, BBQ grill, shelving, home decor and a porch swing.

The dinner plate will include catfish.

SAU Rankin College of Business students earn more than 20 awards MAGNOLIA (04/17/2018)— Southern Arkansas University’s Rankin College of Business students recently brough home more than 20 awards from the annual Phi Beta Lambda Conference in Little Rock, from April 6-7, 2018.

Students from this area include: Aaron Brock, a senior Accounting major from Smackover, placed first in Forensic Accounting and third in Financial Concepts. His standing in Forensic Accounting has qualified him to compete at the PBL National Leadership Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 23-26.

Amanda Easley, a junior Business Administra­tion: Financial-Analysis major from El Dorado, placed third in Cost Accounting. Her standing in Cost Accounting has qualified her to compete at the PBL National Leadership Conference in Baltimore, Maryland, on June 23-26.

Kelsie Madison, a junior Business Administra­tion: Marketing major from El Dorado, placed third in Job Interivew and fifth in Public Speaking.

Cordell McDonald, a senior Business Administra­tion: Marketing major from Smackover, placed first in Future Business Executive and second in Business Ethics with teammate Aaron Autrey.

SAU Rankin College of Business has a longstandi­ng tradition of excellence in Phi Beta Lambda. Since 1974, SAU PBL has earned more than 320 national awards.

Mulerider L.E.A.D. class celebrates successful inaugural year MAGNOLIA - The Mulerider L.E.A.D. (Lead, Excel, Advance, and Develop) class of 2017-18 has had a great first year at Southern Arkansas University. Mulerider L.E.A.D. is profession­al developmen­t promoting leadership through a cohort model. The one-year process includes leadership modules as well as an overview of various SAU department­s.

One of the goals of L.E.A.D. “grow” leaders at SAU. Not only do participan­ts experience a variety of leadership modules, they learn more about various areas at SAU. The SAU department­al involvemen­t this inaugural year included Student Affairs, the academic deans, Physical Plant, Developmen­t, Foundation and Alumni, Human Resources, and Financial Affairs.

In addition to face-to-face sessions, the L.E.A.D. class had virtual learning/ discussion sessions on such topics as recruitmen­t, retention, and communicat­ion. The class also had an action project year which aligned with AQUIP. Class members worked together to create a recycling proposal and work closely with our institutio­nal effectiven­ess and strategic planning department. To bring attention to their project, they sponsored a booth at the AQUIP Day, handing out “earth stress balls” and will have a Recycling Awareness Day at SAU on April 25. On Monday, April 9, the class had a banquet and recognitio­n ceremony where Dr. Trey Berry, SAU president, spoke about the significan­ce of being a leader. He gave examples from history with stories of how the courageous choices of others changed the world. He inspired the future leaders at SAU to make a difference.

UAM women win UT-Martin Rodeo MONTICELLO, AR — Whitney DeSalvo scored a combined 135 points in two events to lead the University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s rodeo team to a first place finish at the University of Tennessee-Martin Rodeo last week.

DeSalvo, a sophomore education major from Springfiel­d, grabbed 115 points for a third place finish in breakaway roping and added another 20 points in the team roping competitio­n. Ashley Newcomb, a senior agricultur­e major from Royal, scored 100 points after finishing in a third place tie in goat tying, Jessica Rowland, a senior agricultur­e major from Bonnerdale, added 10 points to the UAM team total in breakaway roping while Abby Searcy, a senior nursing major from Monticello, scored 60 points in barrel racing.

UAM’s team total of 305 points was five points better than runner-up Southern Arkansas. Host UT-Martin finished third, followed by Missouri Valley College, Murray State, Three Rivers and East Mississipp­i Community College.

UAM music combos to present free concert April 30 MONTICELLO, AR — Four music combos, including the newly-formed UAM Rock Band, will present a free public concert at the University of Arkansas at Monticello April 30 at 7 p.m. in the Visual and Performing Arts Center.

Don Marchand, director of bands, will conduct the performanc­e, which will include Jazz Combo I, Jazz Combo II, Jazz Trombone Choir and the UAM Rock Band. The performanc­e will include many styles of jazz and pop/rock music. The UAM Rock Band will perform several genres of pop/rock with featured student vocalists Bradley Brassfield and Stormy Donham. Marchand will be joined by both graduate assistant conductors Zachary Hurley and James Gathright for this portion of the program.
