Union County Master Gardeners to host annual plant sale.
Union County Master Gardeners are busily preparing for their annual plant sale to be held Saturday from 8 a.m. until noon (or until sold out) in conjunction with the Mayhaw Festival. The Master Gardeners will be set up in front of the Dickerson Law Firm at 407 N. Jackson. Master Gardeners have been working in the greenhouse and have been busy potting up plants from their local gardens. The sale will include annuals and perennials, as well as shrubs and trees. Some of the plants being offered are considered “pass-along” plants and are not often found in nurseries.
A few of the plants we would like to highlight are milkweed, the host plant for the Monarch Butterfly, Red Buckeye, a native shrub with beautiful red blooms and Lion’s Tail, a neat annual with unusual round pods sporting orange flowers.
Master Gardeners will be on hand to assist with selections, answer gardening questions and help carry purchases to customer’s vehicles. Master Gardener John Segraves will be sharpening hand tools so bring your clippers by to have them sharpened while you shop for plants.
As a part of the Mayhaw Festival the Union County Master Gardeners will have a booth where children may pot up a blooming plant to take home and nurture. This activity is free of charge and is a great way to introduce children to the joy of growing things.
Union County Master Gardeners are volunteers who receive many hours of horticulture training through the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture Research and Extension. Master Gardeners work in the community to further horticulture interests and beautify the local area and are always looking for more volunteers. Be sure to ask for information about becoming a Master Gardener while you are shopping the plant sale.
