Garrett runs on experience for District 10 JP seat
Bret Garrett says he has the experience to be District 10’s Justice of the Peace.
A two-way race is underway between Garrett and opponent Donald Brock for the District 10 position. Cliff Preston, who is not seeking re-election to that position, currently holds the seat. Garrett is also running for a spot on the Union County Republican Committee, “to become more involved in the political process in an effort to make a difference in our community,” he says. The two Republicans will face off in the May 22 primary election in a winner-take-all vote.
Garrett says that his 36 years of relevant experience have prepared him for the job. He was previously an engineer at Lion Oil and has served on the El Dorado Water and Sewer Commission, on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts and as a United Way Loaned Executive. He said that at Lion Oil, he dealt with budgets many times larger than the county’s. His educational experience includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and Technology from Oklahoma State University.
“I am a conservative and believe in financial accountability and getting the most value for each dollar spent,” Garret said.
He said that he plans to engage with the community in order to make the best decisions for the county. Garrett also says that he believes open, honest communication is an important attribute for public servants to have.
Garrett is a member of College Avenue Church of Christ with his wife Catherine. They have two adult sons, Jared and Lance. He is from El Dorado and says he enjoys serving the public and working to better the community.
The office of Justice of the Peace is a part-time position. It paid $5,522 in 2017.
