Courthouse to be closed on Memorial Day
The Union County Courthouse will be closed on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
Summer terms at South Arkansas Community College
Summer terms at South Arkansas Community College begin next week, but there still is time to enroll and new options for paying for college, according to school officials.
There are three different summer term options— time-compressed semesters—at South Ark. The first short summer term lasts approximately five weeks and begins on May 29. The second short summer term lasts about five weeks and begins on July 2. The long summer term runs concurrently to the other two terms and starts on May 29.
Classes meet more frequently, and longer each session, than they would during a fall or spring semester, getting in as much class time but over a shorter period.
Federal Pell Grants—college student aid—are available for use to qualifying students during summer terms this year for the first time in seven years. More information is available by contacting South Ark’s financial aid office at (870) 864-7150.

Tax delinquent land sale in Union County set for June 6
The public auction for the sale of tax delinquent land in Union County will be held at the Union County Courthouse at 10 a.m. June 6, according to John Thurston, Arkansas Commissioner of State Lands.
Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. June 6.
The Commissioner of State Lands offers an online catalog of tax delinquent lands, which contains the current statutes governing the sales, auction dates, times, location and other pertinent information regarding parcels being offered.
The catalog can be found on the commissioner’s website at cosl.org, providing information about each parcel.
“Bidding begins at the amount of taxes and fees that are due,” Thurston said. “Owners of delinquent parcels should remember that they have only 10 business days to redeem their property if it sells at auction.”
Delinquent property owners may call the office at 501-324-9422 to request a petition to redeem or they may look up the delinquent parcel on the COSL website and print it from there.
