Dewey advances in gymnastics
PUYALLUP, Washington - El Dorado’s Anabelle Dewey took another big step forward in her young gymnastics career on Friday. Dewey earned her HOPES/Elite compulsory score in the second session of the Auburn National Elite Qualifier in Tacoma, Washington.
Dewey, in the 10-11 age division, posted an allaround score of 32.925, including a 9.200 on the floor exercise, which was the second best in the session. With her performance, she leaped from Level 4 to Elite Compulsory in a year’s time.
“This is huge for her since this time last year she had never done anything beyond JO Level 4 gymnastics,” said Christy Dewey, Anabelle’s mother. “She had never practiced any of these skills until a few months ago. She is such a hard worker and continues to amaze us.”
In addition to her 9.200 on the floor, Dewey scored a 9.150 on the vault, 8.325 on the beam and a 6.250 on the bars, “which is a huge improvement,” according to her mother.
The competition marked a dramatic step up in level for Dewey, who has likely concluded her season. Next year, she will still be doing compulsories plus she will have optional individual routines with increased degrees of difficulty.
Her father, Eric Dewey, said, “After being told now that you have qualified by her coaches, the hard and fun stuff starts, Anabelle replied with a huge smile, ‘I am so excited. If I can do this, I know I can do anything.’”
