Enjoying the pastimes that summer provides.

-

Summer is pretty much here in South Arkansas. Cooper and I decided to start the summer off with one of our favorite pastimes, so we took off to Calhoun County last Thursday.

We always look forward to picking berries every summer at Suzanne's Fruit Farm.

Cooper loves the blueberries and blackberries.

We made it to the berry patch by 10:45 a.m. and we started on the blueberries first.

In just a short time, we had two gallons picked and we headed to the blackberry patch to finish our day.

It was getting a bit hot, so Cooper sat in the car with the air on while I picked a gallon of blackberries right by the car.

After we paid for our fruit, we washed a couple of berries off with a bottle of water and tasted them.

Cooper declared that they were perfect for cobbler and pie.

On our way home, we we're lucky to see a big doe with her fawn crossing the road.

They stood still long enough for a close picture.

Cooper said the fawn was cute but he didn't need to play in the road. I just shook my head. After we made it home, I began the washing and bagging process so I could get them in the freezer.

Cooper was proud of our work and requested a cobbler as soon as possible.

Saturday afternoon, we ventured into the woods around my parents' house in search of huckleberries.

We were blessed to find most of the bushes loaded down with the small cousin of the blueberry.

Cooper informed us that they tasted so good while he sported a blue and purple-stained face.

We managed to pick a 12-ounce cup full of the tiny berries.

We took the huckleberries home and I made a big fruit salad just for my little dude.

Fresh strawberries, raspberries, kiwi added to mandarin oranges and fresh picked huckleberries made for an awesome treat.

I had to add some blueberries from our picking trip as well. He helped me mix it up good and gave me a thumbs up.

I guess it tasted really good because he ate two bowls full.

The rest of the huckleberries will go towards a huckleblue cobbler because he likes to combine them with blueberries.

He told me we could pick more later and use them for pancakes!

I told him he sure had a long cooking list for me.

Cooper said he can't help it because they taste so good!

I guess I will be in the kitchen a lot this week! Questions? Comments? Pictures? Send them to katiemeade25@gmail.com.
