Man charged, held without bond after shooting
An El Dorado man is being held without bond in the Union County Jail on several felony charges stemming from a shooting in which another man was injured last week.
James D. Burton, 40, made his first appearance Monday in 35th Judicial District Court, where he was ordered held without bond for first-degree battery, terroristic act and possession of a firearm by certain persons.
Burton faces additional charges of committing a felony with a firearm and committing an offense in the presence of a child, both of which carry penalty enhancements.
Burton is accused of shooting 39-year-old Khemo T. Caver. The incident occurred at approximately 5:40 p.m. Friday at Hillsboro Town House Apartments, 1600 Short E. Hillsboro.
The men were maintenance workers at the apartment complex said Capt. Kevin Holt, public information officer for the El Dorado Police Department.
He said Burton and Caver were working inside an apartment building when they got into an argument that escalated into shots being fired.
Caver was struck twice, once near the buttocks and once in the lower leg, Holt said. Caver was treated and released from Medical Center of South Arkansas.
During his first appearance hearing Monday, Burton was ordered not to have any contact with Caver and several other Hillsboro residents.
He was determined indigent and will be appointed a public defender. Burton's case will be bound over to Union County Circuit Court for further proceedings.
Vehicle break-ins
Several items that were either reported stolen or believed to have been stolen from vehicles over the weekend were recovered by neighbors and police.
The break-ins occurred on the northwest and
southeast sides of town, according to El Dorado police reports.
A woman told police Sunday that someone broke into her vehicle at her home in the 2300 block of Oxford and stole a battery pack printed with the “Delek” logo.
The woman said the battery pack was a gift from work. She also reported finding a wallet in her driveway, saying that the
wallet contained cards and a driver’s license that bore her neighbor’s name.
Police spoke with the neighbor, who also lived in the 2300 block of Oxford and who said the wallet had been taken from her vehicle.
She said the wallet also contained $4 cash, a prepaid debit card and an electronic benefit transfer card.
Also on Sunday, a
woman reported the theft of her wallet from her vehicle at her residence in the 2400 block of Nevada.
She said the wallet contained $120 cash, a debit card, credit card and driver’s license. She also said $10 cash was taken from a pocket in the passenger door of the vehicle.
While checking for possible vehicle break-ins Saturday in the area of
North Broadway and Lion Avenue, officers said they noticed the trunks ajar on two cars, one in the 100 block of North Broadway and the other in the 100 block of Lion Avenue.
The owner of the vehicle on North Broadway said it did not appear that any items were taken from his vehicle. Police said they were not able to make contact with the owner of the second vehicle.
A woman who lived in the area told police she found two cellphones and a Bluetooth speaker box in her backyard and police reported finding an emergency roadside kit in the 130 block of North Broadway.
