‘Million Dollar Quartet’ heading to El Dorado

Broadway musical to hit the Griffin Music Hall in September

- By the News-Times staff

El Dorado will soon get a taste of Broadway with the Tony Award-winning musical “Million Dollar Quarter” set for the Griffin Music Hall on Sept. 29.

The musical is inspired by true story of what has become known as the Million Dollar Quartet, a legendary recording of a jam session featuring Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins in 1956. The four young musicians and legendary artists were brought together by Sam Phillips, often called the “Father of rock ‘n’ roll” who was responsible for launching their careers, at the Sun Records studio in Memphis — the only

time the four musicians jammed together.

According to a release from the Murphy Arts District, the musical “brings to the stage that one special time when these four legendary artists (all Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees) met and played in the studio at the same time.”

“This unbelievable musical moment is brought to life with an irresistible tale of broken promises, secrets, betrayal, humor, celebration, and unforgettable performances of such timeless and enduring hits as ‘Blue Suede Shoes,’ ‘That’s All Right,’ ‘I Walk the Line,’ ‘Great Balls of Fire,’ ‘Folsom Prison Blues,’ … and more,” the release stated.

The musical won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical and was nominated for Best Musical

and for Best Book of a Musical. It also won an Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical, a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Musical Revue and three Drama League nominations including Distinguished Production of a Musical and Distinguished Performance.

According to the release, MAD members will able to purchase tickets starting Monday, with the general public able to purchase tickets starting Wednesday.
