Bringing Children to prayer

- Captain Jason Perdieu is corps officer of the Salvation Army of El Dorado.

It’s that time of year that many parents have been waiting and praying for: Back to School! With fresh haircuts, new clothes, and school supplies all in order our young people have taken their place for the new school year. Some will be starting new schools, more challenging classes, new teachers and quite possibly new classmates. I’m sure that has brought on some anxiety and nervousness for the kids as well as parents and teachers. Whether children are being “brought” to school by bus, family or bringing themselves I have been reminded of scripture in the gospel of Matthew.

Matthew 19:13 tells us that children were being “brought” to Jesus so that He might put His hands on them and pray for them. His disciples began to rebuke them and hinder the process. “But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of heaven.””

Jesus’ point is clear! Our children matter and we must never think too highly of ourselves or be too busy to take time for them! Now more than ever our children and our schools need our prayers. I hear so much about how kids today are bad and disrespectful. I say let’s all work together and turn it all around. Let’s all try and take time to correct, teach, mentor, and show Jesus to the young people that we have access to. Let’s fight for our children and remind them daily of how important and valuable they are.

I would invite you even now to join me in “bringing” our children, teachers, and schools to Jesus in prayer. I believe that revival is on the way and that it could very well start with our children.

Praying for a blessed and successful school year!
