SEC fines Texas A&M $50,000
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — The Southeastern Conference is fining No. 22 Texas A&M University $50,000 after Aggie fans surged onto the field after A&M's 74-72 win in the seventh overtime period over No. 12 LSU on Saturday.
In a statement Monday, the SEC said the field invasion violates the conference's competition area policy. The $50,000 fine is for a first violation. A second offense would bring a fine of up to $100,000, while a third and subsequent violations would bring fines of up to $250,000.
The conference said it also "remains in contact" with A&M and LSU officials regarding reports of a postgame altercation between A&M and LSU staff members. That is according to a report by The Advocate of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
SEC COMMISSIONER WANTS TO DISCUSS EGG BOWL
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey wants Mississippi athletic director Ross Bjork and Mississippi State athletic director John Cohen to meet him in the league office to discuss "creating a healthier environment" for the annual Egg Bowl matchup.
Mississippi State's 35-3 victory over Ole Miss in Thursday's Egg Bowl included a fight that resulted in four ejections. Sankey said Monday that "these incidents have become too common in this series."
The SEC office also said Mississippi State's Johnathan Abram and Jamal Peters and Ole Miss' A.J. Brown and Matt Corral should have received flagrant personal foul penalties.
The four players ejected Thursday were Peters, Cameron Dantzler
and Willie Gay Jr. from Mississippi State and C.J. Moore from Ole Miss. The SEC said Monday that Dantzler and Moore were misidentified and shouldn't have been ejected.
