Holiday meat giveaway slated for Saturday

The 2018 Mrs. Carrie Kendrix Buggs and Rance Olison Holiday Meat Giveaway is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at the American Legion Post 10, 105 Christian Drive.

Participating in the event will be Rance Olison Jr., former NFL players Priest Holmes, Johnny Walker (who also played Major League Baseball) and others; University of Texas football players; and former pro wrestler Gary Jackson.

Mary Olison, wife of the late Rance Olison, issued a reminder about eligibility requirements for the giveaway, in which turkeys, hams, ducks and game meat, including raccoons, will be distributed.

There will be fewer turkeys this year, and Mary Olison advised those who prefer turkeys to arrive as early as possible, Mary Olison said.

To be eligible for the meat giveaway, applicants must be onsite, at least 50 years old, on a government assistance program — Social Security, Social Security Disability, food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, etc. — and their annual income must be at or below the Federal Poverty Level guideline of $24,600 a year for a family of four.

Applicants must also present proper identification or any other form of proof to demonstrate age or participation in a government assistance program.
